Orthodontic Mini Implants
Until recently there were few alternatives for support that was not their own teeth. One alternative is the extra-oral device, known as “brake donkey.” This alternative is not always accepted by patients
Mini-implants appear as an excellent alternative for temporary anchorage / support. They are small titanium screws tapped without any discomfort in the jaw of the patient and can be used as support, facilitating the work of the orthodontist. Because they are temporary, do not integrate in the bone, such as dental implants, they can be replaced or removed at any time without any discomfort.
When we need to intrude (move “into” the bone) an extruded upper tooth (that moved “out” of the bone), or in the absence of a lower tooth when extrusion was due to lack of contact with the antagonist tooth (upper) mini implants are an excellent choice. Before the existence of mini-implant, the solution was “cut” the crown of the tooth, treat and rehabilitate the canal prosthetic, or extract the tooth and do rehabilitation with implant or prosthesis. But the movement of the mini implants can be achieved in months, and most importantly, the tooth remained healthy (preserved with no wear).
Mini-implants are also excellent for auxiliary distalization and retractions (bring back the front teeth) when orthodontic treatment involves extractions and we can not lose even half a millimeter of space that has been achieved.
